After the head injury that Raúl Jiménez suffered in 2020 in a Wolves game against Chelsea, he has been struggling to establish a scoring streak once again, as he has scored just 6 goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season.
Miguel Herrera, Liga MX club owners' proposal to replace Martino at the World Cup in Qatar
Jiménez has played in 28 games for the Wolves this season in Premier League and two more in the FA Cup, but he’s just managed to find the net on six occasions, as well as assist four times, numbers that are far from what he was used to before his injury.
His performances have turned gray, not only with his club but also the times he has been called to play with the Mexican national team, as he has played 8 games since returning from his injury but has been able to score just two times.
The last time he scored was against Panama, where he scored via penalty kick the lone goal of the match, but if his drought continues, El Tri will have to look for a different plan, one in which Jiménez could be replaced from the starting XI.
In Liga MX there’s not a wide variety of forwards that can replace him, as Rogelio Funes Mori and Henry Martín have proved to be insufficient with both their Liga MX teams and El Tri, which is why the next step Martino should take is looking for a Mexican forward playing outside of Mexican soccer.
That player might as well be Teun Sebastián Ángel Wilke Braams, who currently plays for Serie B side SPAL 2013 U-23 team, although he started his career playing in the Club Querétaro academy squads, where he was born.
Teun Wilke is a 19-year-old striker born in Mexico in a Dutch household, which opened the doors for him to jump to European soccer, where he first joined the academy teams of Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen, but once his contract was over, he decided to continue his career in Italy.
During an interview, Wilke said that he has been contacted by the Netherlands to be part of their academy teams, although he refused because he knows that for now, his heart is with Mexico, where he has played for the U-18 and U-20 teams.
