Now that Mexico National Team knows that they will face Poland, Argentina and Saudi Arabia on the Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, they have seven months to prepare as best as they can to face one of the most balanced groups in Qatar 2022.

The Aztec squad has started their preparation with a friendly game against Guatemala on April 27 that ended in a scoreless draw, where Gerardo “Tata” Martino had to use an alternative roster given that it wasn’t played on a FIFA match window.

The game served for the Argentine coach to tryout players that don’t often have the chance of wearing El Tri colors with the first team, as he knows that having younger options to improve the competition in the roster are needed.

Even if he’s just looking to fill six spots of the 26-man roster, having different options to round out the roster is something that “Tata” didn’t do up until now, as he was stuck with the same players for all the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

Rafa Márquez knows the players that should step down from the Aztec squad

But among the 20 players that Gerardo Martino already decided to call for the roster that will travel to Qatar at the end of the year, not all of them are playing at a level worthy of the Mexican national team, as they will receive their call-up thanks to the time that they’ve spent learning Martino’s system.

Rafael Márquez, former captain of the Mexico National Team and FC Barcelona, said during an interview on the podcast Mother Soccer that there’s four players on the current roster that should leave their place for younger players.

The former center back believes that Andrés Guardado, Guillermo Ochoa, Héctor Herrera and Héctor Moreno should all step down from the Mexican national team as their time already passed, and their call-up is only blocking the growth of four younger players.

Will Mexico have a worthy participation in Qatar?

Márquez was also asked about the possibilities that El Tri have in the World Cup, to what he answered that if the Aztec squad arrives to the World Cup playing like they did during the CONCACAF Qualifiers, they won’t be able to transcend.
