Mexico National Team has one of the toughest games in the CONCACAF Qualifiers on Sunday night, as they will try to ensure their ticket to Qatar 2022 once and for all when they visit Honduras in Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano.
If Mexico's national team qualifies for Qatar, how many consecutive World Cups would it be joining?
But even if it has become one of the most important games since Gerardo “Tata” Martino became the coach of El Tri, the Argentine coach won’t be able to be on the pitch given that he didn’t travel with the committee that arrived yesterday in Honduras.
Instead, it will be Jorge Theiler, his assistant coach, who will be acting as El Tri’s coach for the game on Sunday night. It’s worth mentioning that La H hasn’t won a single game in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, but historically has been a team that Mexico has trouble beating.
Martino will retake his position for the last game of the FIFA match window, when the Aztec squad receives El Salvador, although given his health condition, that could be the last game he coaches El Tri, which is why FMF already has a coach that could replace him and will be counseling Theiler on Sunday night.
It’s yet to be seen if “Tata” Martino is able to continue coaching, something that will become clearer once the FIFA match window is over and the Argentine coach decides if he needs a second surgery or is able to fulfill his contract.
But for now, alongside Theiler, FMF will also requested Jaime Lozano to counsel the Argentine coach, as he knows how the structure of El Tri works and he oversaw the development of some of the players when he was coaching the U-23 squad.
Even Gerardo Martino said during the press conference after the scoreless draw against USMNT, that Jaime Lozano’s worked had influenced the decision he took of calling and starting players like César Montes and Johan Vásquez, who built chemistry during their time in the U-23.
For now, Jaime Lozano will only function as a counselor in case its needed, given that he’s coaching Club Necaxa and won’t leave Los Rayos before Clausura 2022 is over. But if it’s needed, he could arrive over the summer.
