Mexico National Team has yet to play the last CONCACAF Qualifiers to know if they’re going to have a ticket to access directly the 2022 FIFA World Cup, or if they’ll have to wait until June to face the playoffs against the representative of Oceania.
Yon de Luisa and his decision of having Marcelo Bielsa in Mexico National Team
The game that will decide the future of both El Tri and Gerardo “Tata” Martino will be the one to be played on March 24, when Mexico National Team receives USMNT, as both teams are currently tied with 21 points each, although the Bars and Stripes have better goal difference, which is why they are above El Tri on the table.
Martino knows that they have to win and convince in the three games, as Mexican Football Federation is still questioning if he’s the coach that El Tri needs to arrive in Qatar and have a worthy participation and fight for reaching the quarterfinals.
But thanks to Pep Guardiola, Mexico National Team might have found the coach they were looking for, despite the results that Martino can achieve on the last FIFA match window. Ever since Manchester City beat Leeds United 7-0, the alarms started sounding in Leeds, and Marcelo Bielsa’s project as coach of the Peacocks fell apart.
Marcelo Bielsa knows Mexican soccer well, as he coached Atlas and Club América in the 90s. He’s also said that he wants to keep coaching, as he’s not ready to retire just yet, and doesn’t see with bad eyes returning to Mexico.
After he coached Club América on 1996, FMF offered him to be Mexico National Team coach, but he refused as he wanted to be involved in the academy team projects, something he did in both Atlas and América, as he is responsible for giving players like Rafael Márquez, Oswaldo Sánchez, Pavel Pardo and even Cuauhtémoc Blanco the chance of proving themselves in Mexico’s top flight.
Reports suggest that “El Loco” was earning a salary of $5 million per season with Leeds United, and even if the figure is more than the double of what “Tata” Martino is earning currently, they could make an effort to pay him a similar salary to convince him to take over El Tri.
