The Mexican midfielders Edson Álvarez and Edson Gutiérrez played in the Dutch classic to define the first position of the Eredivisie. The farmers, managed by Schmidt, arrived at the match with a one-point lead over Erik ten Hag squad. PSV had the advantage as they also were playing at home, however, the reigning champions of the Dutch championship won the match 2-1.
Both players were motivated as they were called up to the Mexican national team for the next three matches for the Qatar World Cup qualifiers to be held next week against Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Panama. However, before thinking about the Concacaf qualifiers, the Mexican midfielders had an important match to play, and both wanted the win for their respective teams.
Álvarez won the classic against Guti, but not only that, he had a great offensive performance and even almost scored his goal, but it was not the case, although it was enough for him to play the full 90 minutes, despite his yellow card at 24’ minute. Meanwhile, Guti played 87 minutes on the field, where he also created opportunities upfront.
Ajax took the lead in the 34’ minute through Brian Brobbey, and even Álvarez threatened before the end of the first half, sending a ball onto the post after a set-piece. The 1-1 came in the 53´ minute when Gakpo stole the ball from the opponent's exit and served Mario Götze, who scored to make it 1-1.
The 2-1 goal was scored in the 74’ minute by Noussair Mazraoui, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was deemed valid. PSV’s reaction was not enough to get the equalizer as Ajax’s defense stopped the dangerous actions the home team tried in the last minutes of the match.
With the win, Ajax scales to the first place of the Eredivisie championship, they moved two points ahead of PSV, who lost their place to a solid team coached by Erik ten Hag. Edson Álvarez team has 48 points while PSV have 46 points. The fight for the league is open but PSV’s efforts to climb again to the first position must be flawless.
The first time the two teams met earlier this season, Ajax won at home 5-1, crushing Erick Gutierrez's team. Unfortunately for the farmers in this second opportunity to avenge their fans, they were unable to win and in addition to the defeat also lost first place in the league standings.
