Mexico National Team will face one of the toughest games since Gerardo “Tata” Martino arrived in El Tri’s dugout when they receive USMNT in Estadio Azteca on Thursday night, as the Aztec squad hasn’t been able to beat them since 2019.

The game not only matters because it will define the team that secures their ticket first to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as both teams are currently tied with 21 points after 11 games and need 4 more to guarantee their presence in Qatar.

But the real reason for which FMF will be on the lookout for the result, is that Martino has lost three straight games against the Stars and Stripes and given that he hasn’t insured his stay in El Tri with the irregular results he’s had since last year, a new defeat will be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

FMF will part ways with him if El Tri doesn’t win in Estadio Azteca, which is why they’re looking for a potential replacement, and the coach that has become the favorite to replace Martino, is Nicolás Larcamón, from Club Puebla.

His first decision as El Tri’s coach

Larcamón has stated in the past that even if he’s focused on ending the current season with La Franja as best as they can -for now they’re standing third in Liga MX with 22 points after 6 victories, 4 draws and one defeat-, he doesn’t close the door to arriving in El Tri.

The Argentine coach hasn’t hidden the fact that he would like to coach a national team like the Mexican, as they’re usually one of the contenders of CONCACAF, and he already knows how he’ll work with El Tri once Martino is out of the picture.

Larcamón knows that is imperative to establish a similar system to the one that he currently has in Puebla, where the worth of the players resides in the versatility they give to the team on the pitch and not their market value, as well as the need of having young players in the team.

The players that he will stop calling

The Argentine coach will open spots on El Tri’s roster for young players like Alan Mozo or Erik Lira, who haven’t had an opportunity with Martino, but in order to do that, he’s going to stop calling players like Guillermo Ochoa, Héctor Moreno and Andrés Guardado, players that are on the last part of their careers.
