Since Nicolás Larcamón took over Club Puebla a year ago, he’s become one of the best coaches that have arrived in Liga MX in a long time, as he’s been able to help La Franja leave the bottom of the table and made them contenders.
Will Marcelo Flores decide to play for Canada MNT instead of Mexico National Team?
His outstanding performances have placed him on the radar of other Liga MX teams that are going through different kinds of crises, like Chivas and Club América, who already have been linked to the Argentine coach.
He’s even been linked to Mexico National Team as a potential replacement for Gerardo “Tata” Martino in case he doesn’t beat USMNT in the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers match window, although Yon de Luisa and FMF have said that he’s not a candidate for the current cycle given that he’s just starting his coaching career.
For now, he’s said that he is focused on his current job with Los Camoteros and is not thinking about the future, and by doing that, he helped El Tri and Martino to find the new defender that the Aztec squad has been lacking.
Israel Reyes has become one of the essential players in Nicolás Larcamón’s scheme given his versatility and ability to adapt to the different situations throughout the games, as he can play as right-back and defensive midfielder, although his primary position is as center back.
Since his arrival in La Franja in 2020, he has found the regularity and the opportunities that young players usually lack, especially during his second tournament in Puebla, a season before Nicolás Larcamón arrived in Liga MX.
But with Larcamón on La Franja’s bench, Reyes has reached his full potential, as even at 21 years he’s played 47 matches for Club Puebla, most of them on the starting XI. His outstanding participations earned him his first call las December, when Martino called him to play a friendly match against Chile.
One of the things that Martino has been criticized the most during his stint as Mexico National Team coach is the fact that he’s played most of the Qualifiers without young players, as he values more the experience that other players have, even if they’re not playing at a good level, instead of calling young promising players.
