Today's Mexico vs. Honduras match, in which the Mexicans won, left their fans wondering: has the Mexican National Team qualified for the FIFA World Cup?
The reason why Gerardo Martino called Carlos Acevedo to be part of Mexico National Team
Gerardo Martino's squad achieved a much-needed victory against Honduras with a score of 1-0, but it was not enough.
And it was not enough because the Mexican squad is subject to the combination of possible results until the end of the qualifying round, given that they had to win games when they had the chance.
The short answer would be: no because to qualify after the win against Honduras, Costa Rica would have had to lose or draw against El Salvador.
And that did not happen, as the Ticos beat El Salvador 1-2, thus delaying Mexico's qualification to the World Cup. In reality, however, the Mexicans already have one foot in the World Cup.
The reason? Mathematics: with a goal by Edson Álvarez, Mexico defeated Honduras and secured its direct ticket to the World Cup by 99%.
That is to say, although El Tri has not qualified yet, in the next round Costa Rica would have to beat the USMNT and Mexico would have to lose to El Salvador at the Azteca Stadium for Gerardo Martino's team to finish in the reclassification.
And this combination of results is very complicated as Gregg Berhalter's team, with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna, has no intention of losing to Costa Rica.
On the other hand, El Salvador is one of the worst teams in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, with a record of 2 wins, 4 draws, and 7 losses.
Perhaps the only team worse than El Salvador is Honduras, which Mexico already defeated today.
With these numbers, El Tri prolonged its direct ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and will have to secure it in the match against El Salvador.
If the Mexican national team had beaten the USMNT at the Azteca Stadium, they would have reached their match against Honduras with a 3-point lead over Christian Pulisic's squad.
And victory against "H" would have turned the next match into a mere formality since with today's result, El Tri would have already secured a direct ticket to Qatar. But what remains for the Mexican National Team now is to win at all costs at the Azteca Stadium. And that Costa Rica does not beat the United States.
However, if Gerardo Martino's team plays a match against El Salvador like the one they played against the USMNT at the Azteca Stadium, El Tri fans will have nothing to worry about, as their ticket to the World Cup will be assured.
