With the 1-0 victory over Honduras on Sunday night, Mexico National Team clinched one of the three and a half World Cup spots that corresponds to CONCACAF, as El Tri reached 25 points, seven more than Panama with only three more points to be disputed.
Mexico vs Honduras: Has the Mexican National Team qualified for the FIFA World Cup?
For now, the Mexican national team remains third, tied in points with USMNT but with the goal difference on favor of the Americans, as they have +13 while El Tri reached +7 with the goal that Edson Álvarez scored in Honduras.
El Tri has guaranteed their place in the top four of the CONCACAF Qualifiers, but they have to wait until Wednesday night to earn their ticket to Qatar while also avoiding the playoffs, something they will manage to do if they at least draw against El Salvador.
To guarantee the direct passage to the World Cup, the Aztec squad will have to at least save a draw in Estadio Azteca against the Salvadorians, which will place them at 26 points, one point above the highest Costa Rica can reach, but given the bad participation that El Salvador has had, a victory is expected.
Only a defeat against El Salvador could jeopardize the direct passage of the Mexicans to the World Cup, but if that happens, the Ticos will have to beat the Stars and Stripes to tie El Tri in points, something that could happen as the Americans have yet to know what it feels like to win in Costa Rica.
Nevertheless, if that ends up happening, between both results there should be a goal difference of +4 for the Ticos, as for now they have 4 less goals than El Tri, either if Costa Rica wins for three or more goals and Mexico loses for two or more.
The last round of the CONCACAF Qualifiers paints to be an exciting one, especially since the standings haven’t been defined, and even Canada MNT, who are the only team from North America with their ticket to Qatar already booked, could lose the leadership if Panama beats them.
The absence of Gerardo “Tata” Martino in El Tri’s bench made some of the Mexican followers question his continuity, as the performances of the Aztec squad has become predictable and the strikers haven’t scored in over 359 minutes, as neither one of “Tecatito”-Jiménez-“Chucky” have scored since coinciding in the starting XI.
Gerardo Martino will leave out of Mexico National Team one of his favorite players
