On Wednesday night, the Mexican national team will face their first friendly game of the year when they receive Guatemala in Camping World Stadium, in Orlando, Florida. Although the game won’t have the regular roster, players like Marcelo Flores, Jonathan Gómez and Santiago Giménez will make their appearance.
The player that will convince Marcelo Flores to play for Mexico National Team
This is the second time that Gerardo “Tata” Martino calls up the Arsenal U-23 midfielder, as he already played a few minutes on the friendly game against Chile back in December, in Austin, Texas where El Tri tied 2-2 against their Chilean counterpart.
Flores is having an outbreak season with the U-23 squad of the Gunners, where he’s usually involved in the score sheet, whether is the one scoring the goals or assisting them. These performances have made Mikel Arteta call him to train with the first team regularly.
Arteta also gave him his first call-up to a Premier League game, although he couldn’t debut in the 3-0 away defeat against Crystal Palace, but the 18-year-old is getting closer to fulfilling one of his goals for 2022, something that will get him closer to his second goal: playing in Qatar.
But even if Flores has become on of the most followed Mexican players, he still has to face an uphill battle until he can be fully accepted in El Tri’s camp, as he already faced his first problem even if he hasn’t played yet.
According to reports from TUDN, the 18-year-old offensive midfielder is struggling to communicate with the rest of the roster given that he speaks English most of the time, as that is the language that he uses in his day to day.
Marcelo Flores tries to speak Spanish in some situations, but he hasn’t been able to fully integrate with the roster given the language limitation. Santiago Giménez has become one of the closest players to him and serves as a translator most of the time.
Marcelo recently said that if both Canada and El Tri offered him to go to the World Cup, he’d choose Mexico over Canada, but Gerardo Martino has not yet decided if Flores will be part of the final roster, as he still is on formative process.
He could have been the starting striker for Mexico National Team, but Martino preferred Funes Mori
