That’s why he was closely monitored by three different national teams, given that he has the Mexican, Spanish and Argentine citizenships, since he was born in Mexico, his family is Argentinian, but they established in Spain.

But Argentina was the first national team that approached him, which is why he decided to play for them, as he’s been part of their U-15 and U-17 squads, while also closing the door to Mexico and Spain, who wanted to have him on their rosters.

Now, he is being considered by Lionel Scaloni, who has his name in a preliminary list for the senior team of Argentina National Team that will play the upcoming FIFA match window, confirming his decision of playing for Argentina. Although his refuse to play for El Tri opens the possibility for another player that wants to wear Mexico colors.

Who is the player that wants to play for El Tri?

The son of the Uruguayan legend Sebastián “Loco” Abreu was born in Mexico when “El Loco” was playing in Liga MX. Diego Abreu was born in Mexico City in 2003, which is why he holds the Uruguayan and Mexican citizenships, although he could also play for Italy, as he has the nationality from his mother.

But Abreu has said in the past that he wants to play for El Tri, and he’s even been part of the academy teams of the Aztec squad, from the U-16 to the U-20 teams. Even if he also debuted recently with the U-20 squad of Uruguay, he knows that his best chance of playing a World Cup is with Mexico.

Diego Abreu’s numbers in his professional career

He has yet to debut in Uruguay’s top flight, but Sporting Cristal registered him for the current season, as he’s part of their academy teams, where he’s scored over 90 goals, although his debut will have to wait, given that he got injured last December when playing for Uruguay U-20.

He currently is recovering from a torn ACL, which will keep him out of the pitches for six months, something that will leave him room to decide for which national team he wants to play, although Gerardo Martino has already considered him in the past, when he called him to a sparring team that helped El Tri prepare for the 2021 Gold Cup.

When asked about his decision, he said that he considers that Mexico has a more structured work, given the difference of money that both federations have. But he said that he will play for the team that gives him more playing time, which is what every player is looking for.
