Mexico National Team is looking to secure their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup on the game against Honduras on Sunday evening, as a victory against La H and a tie of USMNT and Panama will give them the direct access.
Mexico could be seeded in Qatar 2022, what does it need?
The Aztec squad will face the game with the absence of Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who didn’t travel with the Mexican committee to Honduras, given that a health condition prevented him from travelling in the next few months.
But the fact that the Mexican national team hasn’t been able to ensure their presence in Qatar 2022 with two games left to play in the CONCACAF Qualifiers has been worrying everyone in the Mexican Football Federation.
That’s why the FMF have started looking for a replacement for Martino, not only because the irregularity they’ve showed in the Qualifiers, but also because the health of Martino might keep him out of the World Cup. For now, Martino knows that Jaime Lozano could be the best option for El Tri.
On the press conference after the game against USMNT, where the teams divided points in Estadio Azteca, Martino said that the generational change that is slowly starting to have El Tri’s senior squad is thanks to Jaime Lozano.
The work that Lozano did with the U-23 squad for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics set the bases of the team that will become the starter of El Tri in the future, as he already started Johan Vásquez and César Montes, which is why he’s the perfect coach to continue the process with the Aztec squad.
If Jaime Lozano ends up replacing Gerardo Martino, he knows that he needs to maintain the roster that has worked together for most of the Qualifiers, as they already have built chemistry and know how to work together.
That’s why Guillermo Ochoa would remain as the starting goalkeeper, as he also is one of the leaders of El Tri on the pitch, something that could benefit Lozano at least until Qatar 2022, but after the world cup, Carlos Acevedo could become the starting goalkeeper.
He went from selling flowers to replacing Gerardo Martino in Mexico National Team
