The Argentine naturalized Mexican striker came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute and the fans of El Tri made themselves heard.

The Mexico vs Costa Rica match ended badly for the Mexican national team, but if anyone got the worst of it it was Rogelio Funes Mori, who was booed at the Azteca Stadium when he came out of the game as a substitute, and this was heard on national television.

The match in which the Aztecs were supposed to secure their ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar ended in a 0-0 draw that puts the Mexican team's qualification to the tournament at risk.

In a match with very few chances for Costa Rica, which sat back and played on the counterattack, the Mexican team needed more than ever the talent of its forwards to score.

But on this occasion, the Mexican attacking axis of Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, Jesús "Tecatito" Corona, and Rogelio Funes Mori came out with wet powder and could not be effective, apart from a goal that was disallowed to the Monterrey player.

The booing of Funes Mori was heard on national television

In Mexico, the match was broadcasted by Televisa and TV Azteca, channels that could not prevent the generalized rejection of the Mexican fans towards the naturalized Mexican Argentinean from being heard.

Even the popular TV Azteca host, Christian Martinoli, mentioned this fact during the live broadcast of a match to forget.

The booing of Rogelio Funes Mori reflected the feelings of the Mexican fans

In the 62nd minute of regular playing time, Rogelio Funes Mori was substituted, along with Jesús Gallardo, and in his place came Henry Martín and Gerardo Arteaga.

At that moment, the Aztec Stadium made itself heard and the booing of Funes Mori resounded throughout the stadium. As soon as the player disappeared from the public's view, the booing stopped, but the Azteca' opinion was more than clear.

Rogelio Funes Mori is not the first Mexican naturalized player to receive harsh criticism from the fans

The case that Rogelio Funes Mori is going through is very reminiscent of what happened with Guillermo "Guille" Franco, an Argentinean player who was also naturalized as a Mexican and who represented Mexico in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

On that occasion, Franco had a stronger role in the Mexican national team as he contributed with 2 goals in 5 games in the World Cup qualification stage

The case of "Guille" Franco

However, in that tournament, the Mexican team was eliminated where it always was: in the round of 16 against Argentina, and at that moment the Mexican fans looked for the culprits and found them in the team's coach, Javier Aguirre, and "Guille" Franco.

At that time, the "Vasco" was blamed for having used Franco instead of Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, and for that reason, Mexico had lost to Argentina.

As a result of this situation, in September 2010, Franco announced his retirement from the Mexican national team, and in February 2013, he generated controversy in Mexico after describing Mexican nationalism or patriotism in the issue of naturalized players in the national team as "idiotic"

On January 29, 2013, he announced his retirement as a professional soccer player, but Mexican fans always had the feeling that "Guille" Franco owed the Mexican national team his performance.
