A week before Guatemalan League starts, Antigua GFC decided to fire former Mexican international Carlos “Gullit” Peña, after only one semester on the team. He was under contract until the end of the season but now will have to look for a new team if he wants to keep playing.

According to his agent, the decision came as the team is trying to change the game style and system they were working with. Peña said that the news surprised him as “they had a good tournament, and he didn’t have any problems. But that’s how soccer is.”
With Antigua GFC, Peña played a total of 16 games and managed to help his former team reach the playoffs, where they were eliminated by Deportivo Malacateco, who ended up becoming champions. During his short stint he was able to score four goals.

During the offseason, rumors linked “Gullit” Peña with Liga MX Santos Laguna, who were interested in adding the 32-year-old midfielder, as Pedro Caixinha is already familiar with him, as he coached Peña during his stint in Glasgow Rangers.
