Now that Mexico National Team has ensured their presence in Qatar 2022 and knows the teams that they will face in the group stage, Gerardo “Tata” Martino has seven months to make the Aztec squad improve their performances.

Martino himself has said that El Tri prioritized the results leaving the performance on a secondary level, something that will hurt their aspirations on the 2022 FIFA World Cup if the Argentine coach doesn’t manage to make them play like the used to during the first two years of his stint.
Before the debacle of the Mexican national team that started on the final of the CONCACAF Nations League, the Mexican Football Federation and Yon de Luisa were expecting to extend Martino’s stay in El Tri’s dugout for the 2026 World Cup.
But now, seeing that he couldn’t maintain the same level and that it’s uncertain if El Tri will be able to compete against Poland and Uruguay, their two biggest rivals in Qatar, De Luisa already has a new coach ready to assume the job as soon as the Aztec squad finishes their participation in the World Cup.
Even if there’s still eight more months until the end of the World Cup, FMF already started looking for a new coach, given that Mexico, alongside Canada and United States, will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and they know they need to have the best performance on their history.
That’s why Yon de Luisa is planning the next World Cup cycle and has started conversations with Matías de Jesús Almeyda, who already presented his resignation letter to San Jose Earthquakes management this weekend after the 2-2 draw against Nashville SC.
Almeyda was on the last year of his contract and had said during an interview for ESPN that he could leave the Quakes whenever he wanted, as there wasn’t a release clause preventing his departure if a good offer convinced him.
Now that Almeyda is free, he will receive several offers, including some of Liga MX clubs like Chivas or Cruz Azul, who are looking for a new coach. If El Tri wants to convince him to sign, they will have to offer him at least a $2 million per year.
He’s already playing in Europe and could solve Mexico National Team scoring problems
