The Mexican national team will face their first friendly game of the year this Wednesday, when they receive Guatemala in Camping World Stadium, as part of the Mextour that they do every year throughout the United States.

Yon de Luisa and FMF already decided what to do with Gerardo Martino prior to Qatar 2022

Although El Tri won’t have their usual starters, given that is not played in a FIFA match window and teams weren’t obliged to loan their players, the Aztec squad will have players like Marcelo Flores, Jonathan Gómez, and Santiago Giménez on the pitch.

The reason behind their call-ups to the senior team -most of the players in the roster that will play against Guatemala are U-23- is so Gerardo “Tata” Martino can see closer a different group that don’t usually is part of the camps but have the talent to be part of the final roster for the World Cup.

But Gerardo Martino will have to rely on what Jorge Theiler and his other assistant coaches tell him about the group, as he wasn’t able to travel with the team to Orlando, Florida, given that his health condition prevents him from travelling by plane.

Will he be in Qatar 2022?

In the press conference prior the game against Guatemala, Martino was questioned about his health and his future with El Tri if he is not able to travel with them to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, given that he won’t be in the sidelines of Camping World Stadium on Wednesday night.

It’s worth remembering that this is not the first time that Gerardo Martino misses a game due to the recovering process of the retinal detachment procedure he went through a couple months ago, as he also didn’t travel with El Tri to Panama in the last FIFA match window.

According to experts, it will take from three up to six months for him to fully recover and be able to travel by plane again. For now, that period will end prior to the World Cup, but Martino is aware that, if for whatever reason he’s not fully recovered, he’ll have to resign.

He spoke about his future with El Tri

The Argentine coach was clear about his future with El Tri, and he expects to be fully recovered before the Mexican team travels either to Europe to finish their preparation or to Qatar, and he even said that if he “had to wait more time, he’d already had stepped down from El Tri.”
