In the last year, Gerardo “Tata” Martino has been criticized mainly for two things. The first one, for the lack of opportunities he’s given to young players especially when the usual players on his roster haven’t prove to be effective.

The second one is for the lack of goals Mexico National Team has scored, as they couldn’t score more than three goals in any of the CONCACAF Qualifiers game they played, which prevented them from ending as the first seeded.

Canada MNT scored more than three goals on three occasions, while USMNT did it the same number of times, which explains the abundant goal difference both teams had at the end of the Qualifiers, a reason that the Mexican followers used to ask for his dismissal.

During an interview with TUDN, Martino was asked about his possible departure of El Tri given the poor performances they’ve had, to what he answered that he already considered leaving the Mexican national team.

Will he leave El Tri?

Reports suggested that back in November, Martino presented his resignation letter after the defeat against Canada MNT, but the players and the FMF backed him up and he decided to stay in El Tri’s bench to fulfill his contract.

Even if the performances haven’t been the best, the results helped Martino to keep the calm, and the players always showed they trust him, as it was evident on the celebration after the goal that Uriel Antuna scored against El Salvador, when every player run to hug Martino.

And after they got the ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Yon de Luisa ratified him as the coach that will be with the Aztec squad in November, as they believe they have the best chances of having a worthy performance with him in the dugout.

Eight months to improve their performances

El Tri now has eight months to solve the problems they showed during the Qualifiers, as well as look for potential rivals similar to the ones that they’ll face in the group stage to arrive the best prepared they can to Qatar.
