Gerardo Martino won’t travel with Mexico National Team to Honduras, will he resign?

The scoreless draw means little to both teams in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, as neither of them have ensured their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but it gives the USMNT a boost morale for the last two games of the FIFA match window.

For the Aztec squad, it proves that they haven’t found the needed regularity to establish as the CONCACAF Giant, a title they lost a while ago and that they haven’t been able to earn back, and they won’t seem to be close to win again, especially with Gerardo “Tata” Martino on their dugout.

Instead of assuming his responsibility after the 0-0 draw against the Stars and Stripes, Martino pointed to the referees as the responsible, as he believed that they weren’t unbiased and harmed El Tri’s aspirations by not calling some of the more doubtful plays in favor of Mexico.

What did he say about the draw against USMNT?

Martino also pointed out that even if the result against the Stars and Stripes wasn’t the expected one, he wasn’t hired just to beat USMNT, as his job is to help El Tri play in the World Cup, something they’re still working to achieve.

And even if on the long run, that’s the main goal, the fact that the Aztec squad hasn’t been able to beat their archrival in over two years in an official competition, and that it will take at least four more years to have the chance of playing against them in a Qualifying match, doesn’t look good in his resumé.

What does Mexico National Team need to play in the World Cup

Mexico National Team still needs at least three more points to ensure their participation in Qatar 2022 with two games left to be played, especially since Costa Rica beat Canada and Panama couldn’t win on their visit to Honduras.

For now, El Tri stands third with 22 points, tied with USMNT and three points away from Canada MNT. With the victory over Canada, Costa Rica is standing fourth with 19 points, just one point over Panama, who are out of the World Cup if the Qualifiers ended today.
