Mexico National Team already started their preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a friendly game against Guatemala, a game that Gerardo “Tata” Martino used to check out different players from the ones he’s used to call up regularly.

Gerardo Martino is not considering calling up Carlos Acevedo for Qatar 2022

Martino knows that even if the debut game in Qatar 2022 against Poland will be the one that decides who is going to be the team that makes it to the knockout stage along Argentina, the game against La Albiceleste will be the perfect opportunity to make a statement.

That’s why El Tri agreed to play three of the friendly games they will held during the summer against CONMEBOL teams: Ecuador, Uruguay and Paraguay, being the one against Uruguay the closest to Argentina’s level, especially since Diego Alonso called up the starting squad.

It’s yet to be seen what Martino ends up doing for that game, as he has previously said that the games that El Tri plays over the summer will have a roster made up of mostly U-23 players, as he knows that the Aztec squad needs younger players to be able to compete against the speed of their rivals in Qatar.

A new option emerges for Martino

Although he hasn’t revealed the list of players that will face the three friendly games and the two matches of the CONCACAF Nations League that will be played in the next month, Martino will focus on those players that either play in Europe or have chances of moving there.

But not even having those standards have made him call up Haret Ortega, a 21-year-old center-back that plays for CD Toluca, although according to reports from Turkish media outlet Fotomaç, Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe FK are interested in signing him.

The reports suggest that they are willing to offer him a three-year contract with option of adding one more, as well as a $625,000 per season salary and a signing bonus worth $1.2 million if he agrees to join them over the summer.

Will he make it to Qatar?

So far, the Argentine coach hasn’t even considered Ortega to be part of the Mexican national team, even if he’s one of the most consistent young center-backs in Liga MX along Israel Reyes from Club Puebla, but if he makes the jump to Europe, Martino will have to call him up, at least as a reserve defender.
