After his arrival in 2019 as coach of Mexico National Team, Gerardo “Tata” Martino only lost one game in two years with El Tri. But in 2021, things got complicated as they lost 3 games in a row against USMNT, including two finals of CONCACAF tournaments.

El Tri’s debacle didn’t stop there, as they lost back-to-back games against USMNT and Canada MNT to lose the first place on the World Cup Qualifiers, and things haven’t got better this year, as they couldn’t manage to beat Costa Rica and is just one point away from losing the direct access to Qatar.

Gerardo Martino said in press conference that he is the one that takes the decisions, which is why he’s partially responsible for the current performances of El Tri, but the players have part of the blame too as they look lost on the pitch.

What else did Martino say?

In the press conference prior to the match against Panama, Martino agreed with the decision made by Mexican Football Federation of not having people on the stands of Estadio Azteca, as he knows that fans are not happy and would manifest against the team, something that will pressure them even more, which is why he’s glad there will only be 2000 followers tonight.
