One of the main problems that Gerardo “Tata” Martino faced during the CONCACAF Qualifiers was the lack of a striker that could score consistently, as the main three forwards that he called up were able to score only six goals between the three of them.

Raúl Jiménez was the top scorer, as he found the net on three occasions, all of them via penalty kick, which is worrying as a team can’t rely on having a penalty kick every game. Behind him Henry Martín was able to score two goals, both against Jamaica.

Rogelio Funes Mori was the other forward that found the net, although the CF Monterrey striker only scored one goal. but Martino knows that El Tri needs a striker that can make the difference every single game, which is why he’s considering a new option.

Raúl Jiménez’s spot in the lineup is in danger

Although up until now the 31-year-old striker has been the starting striker for the Argentine coach, the lack of production that he’s had since returning to the pitches after missing nine months due to the head injury he suffered, could make him take on a secondary role.

According to reports from Diario Récord, Martino is considering giving Julio César Furch the opportunity of wearing El Tri colors now that he’s close to having the Mexican citizenship. It’s yet to be seen if he manages to obtain it before the games that El Tri will play for the CONCACAF Nations League.

Furch has played seven years in Mexican soccer, and he’s been an essential player for the three teams he’s played for, as Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, Santos Laguna and now Atlas FC have benefited for his consistent scoring streak.

Can he play for Mexico?

For now, the 32-year-old striker is waiting for his naturalization letter to arrive, which is the last thing that he needs to receive his first call-up, as he never played for Argentina in a senior level and has been living for over five uninterrupted years in Mexico.
