After his arrival in Mexico National Team in 2019 as MLS champion with Atlanta United in the previous season, Gerardo “Tata” Martino was one of the most acclaimed coaches to arrive in El Tri’s bench on recent years, which he supported with good performances on the pitch.
El Tri was only able to save a scoreless draw against Costa Rica
And prior to 2021, El Tri, under his coaching staff, only lost one game. But El Tri’s debacle started with the 2 finals lost against USMNT and then the back-to-back defeats against USMNT and Canada, as the team started to look slow and unsynchronized, which led to the current criticism.
Things haven’t got any better for him and El Tri, especially as the once guaranteed place in the World Cup now is jeopardized. But FMF already has a plan if “Tata” can’t manage to turn things around in the next game against Panama, which he said it’s going to be a final.
Yon de Luisa and FMF already decided that Miguel Herrera will be the next Mexico National Team coach if Martino and El Tri don’t win on Wednesday, as the Argentinian coach compromised to earn at least 7 out of the 9 available points, and so far, they only have 4.
It’s yet to be seen how the Federation negotiates with Tigres, as Herrera -who had a stint as El Tri coach from 2013 to 2015-, is under contract with Los Felinos until 2023. For now, it’s unknown if they’re in conversations, but it’s a fact that FMF wants Herrera as their next coach.
El Tri followers are done with Rogelio Funes Mori as the starter forward
