Mexico National Team will receive USMNT in Estadio Azteca tonight, on a game that will decide how the teams will arrive to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the winner of tonight’s game will most likely be the second classified from CONCACAF.
But not even by knowing that, Gerardo “Tata” Martino decided to call the best available players, as he kept on his roster players like Jesús Gallardo and Héctor Moreno, who haven’t had a good game with El Tri in a long time.
The call of the Monterrey defenders was a surprise given that they left out of the roster two of the most consistent players in Liga MX, Erik Lira and Alan Mozo. The absence of Lira is incomprehensible, but there’s a reason for the absence of Mozo.
According to reports, Alan Mozo was involved in a fight with Jaime Lozano when the Necaxa coach was still in El Tri’s U-23 team prior to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. When Lozano announced the players that were going to be part of the squad and Mozo wasn’t part of it, he confronted the Mexican coach.
Although there’s no evidence of it, some reports even suggest that the discussion ended up in a fist fight, and when Gerardo Martino heard about it, he decided to veto Alan Mozo and erase him from any future calls, something he has fulfilled so far, given that Mozo hasn’t played with El Tri since 2019.
