Diego Lainez was close to leave Real Betis over the winter transfer window, but Manuel Pellegrini convinced him to stay with the promise of giving him more playing time in the second half of the season given that Los Béticos were playing both La Liga and UEFA Europa League.
But Pellegrini didn’t fulfill his promise, as the 21-year-old right winger only played seven games throughout the season in La Liga with only one apparition in the starting XI, playing less than 5% of the minutes.
His lack of regularity has been evident on the games he’s played with the Mexican national team, which is why he’s looking to move over the summer, even if it’s on a loan, as he knows that as long as Pellegrini coaches Betis, he has few options to play.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino also knows this and according to reports, he told Lainez that his place in El Tri is in danger if he doesn’t earn playing time in the months prior to the World Cup. Added to that, Manchester United gave him a surprising news that will have repercussions on his foreseeable future.
Edinson Cavani played the past two seasons at Manchester United, where he had a good first season but then disappeared on the second one given that the injuries kept him sidelined, as he only managed to play 15 games, while scoring two goals and one assistance.
But according to reports from sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Betis is one of the teams most interested in acquiring him for next season, as the Uruguayan international is a free agent after not renewing with The Red Devils.
His addition to Betis will cut even more the opportunities, as the arrival of the 35-year-old striker will be to be part of the starting XI, which is why the summer transfer window looks like his last opportunity to earn playing time elsewhere.
Although his intention is to remain in Europe, where he’s been linked to teams like Primeira Liga side Sporting CP or Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, but if he can’t arrive to either of those teams, Club América are willing to accept him back in Mexico.
Jürgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti could have coached the Mexican national team. Why didn't it happen?
