Napoli emerged victorious from an important match against Atalanta (1-3) and put pressure on Milan in the race to lift the 'Scudetto', while the Bergamo side is complicating its presence in European competitions next season.
Atalanta clearly dominated in the early stages. But soccer is that unpredictable. Napoli, lost, with many difficulties to come from behind due to the absence of the Spaniard Fabian Ruiz in the starting eleven, without the reference of the Nigerian Victor Osimehn upfront, took advantage of three isolated actions to win the game.
Belgian Dries Mertens, today's starter in place of Osimhen, who was suspended, cleverly tipped the ball just enough to keep out Argentine goalkeeper Juan Musso and foul him inside the box. Italy's Lorenzo Insigne, the captain, who has been in questionable form this season, made no mistake. An impeccable penalty that put the southern Italian team ahead in the 12th minute.
The battle on the pitch evened out as the minutes passed. The home side lost their aggressiveness and the Neapolitans began to settle down. And just before the break, Italy's Matteo Politano struck for the second time.
In a rehearsed move, Napoli again pulled on quality resources to extend their lead. Insigne subtly chipped the ball over the barrier for Politano, with a close-range shot from the small area, to put the 0-2 on the scoreboard. Two individual actions were enough for Luciano Spalletti's team to take the lead.
At the hour mark, Dutchman Marten de Roon reopened the game with a header off a pass from Russia's Aleksey Miranchuk, who has now racked up five assists in the competition.
However, the home team's attacking intent left spaces that Napoli took advantage of. The Senegalese Kalidou Koulibaly picked up a loose ball on the edge of his own area and, with a great deal of space, found the Mexican Hirving Lozano on the wing, who drove and timed the ball with quality, waiting for his teammates. Chucky found the Macedonian Elif Elmas, who scored to seal the game and put pressure on leaders Milan.
With this victory, Napoli overcame a difficult start and drew level on points with the Rossoneri, who still have to play this matchday.
