Carlos Vela hasn’t played for Mexico National Team since they were eliminated from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the round of 16, when Brazil beat them by a 2-0 score, as he was erased by Gerardo “Tata” Martino since he became El Tri’s coach.
Who is the player who would arrive at Napoli to fight for Chucky Lozano's place?
For the first two years after Martino replaced Juan Carlos Osorio, the absence of Carlos Vela went unnoticed as the Aztec squad only lost one game over that span of time, against Wales on a friendly match during a tour on Europe.
But since El Tri were defeated by USMNT in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League, the performances of the Mexican national team have diminished to the point of having to prioritize the victory over the way they performed.
Now, with less than seven months for the World Cup, Gerardo Martino has to find a way of recovering the level showed by the Mexican squad during the first two years of his stint, something that might only be able to achieve if he lifts the veto to players like Carlos Vela.
At only 32 years old, Carlos Vela is still performing at a high level with MLS side Los Angeles FC, team that he joined back in 2018 out of La Liga side Real Sociedad. And even if he announced a few months ago that he didn’t intend on playing again for El Tri, there’s still a possibility.
According to reports from sports journalist Álvaro Morales, after realizing that Mexico National Team needs all the help that they can get to have a worthy participation in Qatar 2022, Vela would come out of retirement under one condition that might not be to the liking of FMF and Yon de Luisa.
One of the main problems that “El Bombardero” faced when he was still playing for the Aztec squad was the inequity with which FMF rewarded the players from making it into the World Cup and advancing to the knockout stage, which is why his only request is that the awards are awarded equitably.
Gerardo Martino has said in different press conferences that he will give the chance to play with El Tri over the summer to players that don’t usually get to wear the Mexican colors on his usual roster, which gives Vela the chance of returning to El Tri, although if he’s blacklisted, FMF will refuse to accept his call up.
