Gerardo “Tata” Martino has seven months to build the best possible roster to face the Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Mexico National Team will have Poland, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia as rivals.
Raúl Jiménez could play in Bayern Munich thanks to a $28 million reason
If Martino wants to transcend in Qatar 2022, not only to get pass through the group stage but reach the quarterfinals, something he already did once with Paraguay, he knows that he has to call the players that are going through a good and consistent streak, not mattering if they were part of the roster before.
That will also cost their spot on El Tri to some of the players that played during the CONCACAF Qualifiers, like Luis "Chaka" Rodríguez, Jesús Gallardo or even Henry Martín, as they have proven to be far from the level needed to play in a World Cup.
For now, the only player that has his placed guaranteed in the starting XI of the Argentine coach is Guillermo Ochoa, Club América's goalkeeper, although that might change if he doesn't renew his contract with Las Águilas, something that will open the door to Carlos Acevedo to battle for the starting role.
According to the report of Sancadilla, a Mexican sports outlet, Ochoa knows that he's on the last part of his career, which is why he's considering prioritizing money over competitiveness, as well as the opportunities he can give his daughters in the future.
That's why he hasn't started negotiating with Las Águilas his contract extension, as he knows that if he leaves to the MLS, he'd be able to ensure a higher salary as well as a better lifestyle for his children, even if it is at the expense of his level.
For now, he has a couple of offers from MLS teams, but if he leaves, he knows that it will open the door for Acevedo to take the starting role, as the Santos Laguna goalkeeper will still be playing at the highest level.
Gerardo Martino has started to call younger players, like Acevedo and Israel Reyes from Puebla, as he knows that El Tri needs younger players, although this generational change is also related to the needs that he has now that several Mexican players are considering arriving at the MLS in the next few months, which will lower the level of the Aztec squad.
