Guillermo Ochoa has been the starting goalkeeper of Mexico National Team since the 2014 FIFA World Cup, when he won the race to Although, even after “Chuy” had won the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics two years before.
Diego Lainez received the worst news possible from Real Betis
Since then, there hasn’t been a goalkeeper able to take away his place in the starting XI of El Tri, as the Aztec squad has had four different coaches since then, including Gerardo “Tata” Martino, and none of them have tried to move him.
His stay in Mexico’s goal has closed the door to multiple players, including “Chuy” Corona, who hasn’t been called since 2018, and Carlos Acevedo, although the 25-year-old is still hoping to be part of the final roster that will play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
But the 36-year-old Club América player might be living his last games as the starting goalkeeper for the Aztec squad, as a younger player has started to gather attention, not only from El Tri but also from European teams like Bayern Munich.
According to reports, there’s a 6-feet-2, 16-year-old goalkeeper that is impressing with his performances in MLS. He’s part of Real Salt Lake academy teams, although he has yet to debut in the United States top flight, as he currently plays with their reserves team, Real Monarchs, in MLS Next Pro.
Fernando Delgado made his debut with Real Monarchs last season, where he played a game as the starting goalkeeper for the Real with just 15 years old, when they played their last season in USL Championship, but that was enough to gather attention from European teams, who are following his development.
Delgado has both Mexican and American citizenships, he can play for Mexico National Team, something he’s done in the past as he’s been part of the U-17 academy team of El Tri, although he also played in the same category for USMNT.
But the possible departure of Guillermo Ochoa from El Tri’s goal could open the door to Delgado to decide to play for Mexico National Team instead of the Bars and Stripes, as there will be more opportunities for the younger goalkeepers once Ochoa is out of the Aztec squad.
