After CF Monterrey decided to part ways with Javier Aguirre given that “El Vasco” couldn’t reach the semifinals of the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup and wasn’t able to win a single Liga MX title, as he was eliminated in quarterfinals on the two tournaments he was in Rayados’ dugout.
All you need to know about Monterrey’s next match
Now, Monterrey is standing 16 on Clausura 2022 after not winning just one game. Rayados is tied in points with Club América and Santos Laguna, although the goal difference is what keeps them above their rivals.
They’ve also had the advantage on their side, as they have played just 5 games, given they participated in the Club World Cup, something that will benefit their next coach, as he’ll have time to mend things and could have Rayados out of the bottom part of the table in no time if they win their two postponed games.
Reports suggest that the only thing that’s keeping Victor Manuel Vucetich from returning to Monterrey for a second stint is a signature, as he’s ready to take over the team that earned him the nickname of “Midas King”.
Vucetich’s arrival in Monterrey won’t be just to save the team from the bad streak they currently are, but for returning the team to the top places of Liga MX table and to become a contender once again, something that probably won’t happen this season, given that he still has to build a roster with the strengths he's looking for.
That's why he’ll push to acquire Uriel Antuna over the summer, as he knows of the explosiveness of the Cruz Azul winger, given that he coached him during his stint in Chivas, where Antuna was a regular on his squad.
Although Cruz Azul didn’t pay for Antuna -he was part of a trade between Chivas and Cruz Azul that also involved Alejandro Mayorga and Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado-, Monterrey will have to pay at least $5 million if they want to acquire the Mexico international right-winger.
He didn’t have much luck on his last coaching job with Chivas -Amaury Vergara decided to fire him after 45 games, in which he won 17, tied 17 and lost 11-, his numbers with Monterrey were outstanding, as he won two Liga MX titles and three consecutive CONCACAF Champions League.
Vucetich arrived in Monterrey for the 2009-10 Liga MX Season, when he won his first Liga MX title. A year later he won his second championship in Mexico’s top flight, and his first SCCL. He stepped away from his position in 2013, after coaching 239 games, from which he won 113, tied 69, and lost the remainder 57.
This coach, who has already managed Monterrey, would replace Javier Aguirre
