After the violent acts that happened last weekend in Estadio Corregidora have carried multiple sanctions to Club Querétaro and their followers, although the team wasn’t disaffiliated, they have to play their games at closed doors for the next year and the owner and different directors will be vetoed from Mexican soccer for five years.

But the biggest measure taken against Gallos Blancos for not being able to guarantee the safety of the people in the stands is the obligatory sale of the team by Jorgealberto Hank, who was still registered as owner of the club. Hank and Grupo Caliente have until the end of 2022 to sell the team.

Grupo Caliente already owns two Mexican clubs: Xolos de Tijuana from Liga MX and Dorados de Sinaloa, who plays in Liga de Expansión, Mexico’s second flight, although they’ve played in the top division in recent years.

After Hank sells the team, the new owners could do whatever they want with the team, from keeping it in Querétaro to relocate it, although the latter option is the most probable to happen, as the violence showed on the game against Atlas is something no one wants to see again in a stadium.

Where can Gallos Blancos relocate?

According to sports journalist David Medrano, the owner of Club Atlante, Emilio Escalante, is interested in acquiring the team. This is not the first time that Escalante shows interest in Querétaro franchise, as he was negotiating the acquisition of the team in 2020, although he decided to keep the franchise currently has in Liga de Expansión.

However, given the new opportunity that has presented, he is interested in retaking the negotiations, as he has an advantage over all the other parties interested: he has a stadium and training facilities, a requirement made by FMF in order to have a team in Liga MX, although he won’t maintain it in Querétaro but rather relocate it in Mexico City where Atlante plays.

Reports suggest that acquiring a Liga MX team could cost $40 million at least, depending on the franchise, a figure that could complicate negotiations, although Escalante could include the Liga de Expansión team he currently has in the arrangement.

Atlante’s numbers in Liga de Expansión

Even if there hasn’t been a promotion/relegation system in Mexican soccer since 2018 and there won’t be for at least a year more, in Atlante they’re preparing to fulfill every condition requested by Liga MX to be able to be promoted if they don’t acquire Club Querétaro.

So far, Los Potros are standing eight in Liga de Expansión after 10 rounds, although they have a pending match. Atlante has won three games, tied four more, and lost the remainder two, resulting in 15 points. They still have a chance to be part of the playoffs.
