For the first leg of the quarterfinals of Clausura 2022, Club América visited Estadio Cuauhtémoc to face Club Puebla in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw but that Las Águilas finished with two injured players that will affect Fernando “Tano” Ortíz’s planning for the remainder of Liguilla.
He was the top reinforcement in the defense of América and Cáceres sets an example for him
Las Águilas will receive Club Puebla on Saturday night for the second leg in what will be the toughest match for the team since Fernando Ortíz took over, as they won’t be able to have Federico Viñas on the pitch given the injury that he suffered.
Is yet to be seen if Richard Sánchez is able to recover before the game, although his absence won’t be felt as much given that Pedro Aquino could take his place like he did on Wednesday night and quickly integrate to the team’s playing style.
On the other hand, Ortíz won’t have any other choice than to start Henry Martín instead of Viñas, given that he has habilitated Roger Martínez as a left-winger and that there is no other striker in the roster, something that will complicate things for Las Águilas.
The 28-year-old forward arrived at Club América as a personal request from Miguel Herrera back in 2018 when he became Las Águilas coach, as the Mexican coach knew him for his stint in Xolos de Tijuana and knew of the potential that Martín had.
With Herrera on the dugout, Martín was a solid striker for the first two years of his stint, but since “El Pijo” left, his level dropped as months went by, until the current season, where he only found the net in three occasions, although the lack of confidence he’s showed has diminished his performances significantly.
But even if he’s proven time and again that he doesn’t have the level needed to play for Club América, Santiago Baños insists on keeping him in the club, as the Mexico international is represented by an agency, PitzGroup, that has a good relationship with Las Águilas president and that usually negotiates with América.
Reports suggest that this will be the last season of Martín in Club América, as they know they need to improve the position for Apertura 2022 if they want to transcend, which is why they are looking to sell him. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is set at $3.7 million.
