With the departure of Santiago Solari after the 1-1 draw in Estadio Azteca against Club Querétaro, Las Águilas were left at the bottom of the table of Clausura 2022, something that hadn’t happened since 2017, when Ricardo La Volpe was coaching them.

But even with a crisis in which the Argentine coach left the Azulcremas, it was obvious that the main problem was him, as according to the players, Solari never bothered on building strong bonds with the players and was focused solely on the tactical side of the game.

Now, with Fernando “Tano” Ortíz on the bench as interim coach, things are looking different, as the roster seems to be integrating better than ever before, as “Tano” Ortíz has tried to build a group that’s comfortable playing together.

According to reports, what Ortíz wanted to establish on his first full week training with the first team was building a sense of camaraderie, as he noticed that was what Las Águilas lacked. And Guillermo Ochoa was the player that helped him achieve it.

Who will he start against Chivas?

Ortíz knows of the importance of the Clásico Nacional, but he also knows that in order to have good performances, there has to be a good environment in the locker room, something that Solari didn’t manage to do in Clausura 2022.

One of the players that has established a good relationship with Ortiz and his coaching staff is Mexico international Jorge Sánchez, who has been seen having long talks with the interim coach, which could mean that he’s thinking of starting him too.

Some of the players that didn’t feel comfortable with the Argentine coach were the two Paraguayans on the squad, Bruno Valdez and Richard Sánchez, who were relegated to the bench by Solari. Ortíz could show them he’s confident they can still add to the team by giving them a starting role.

But unlike what Solari used to do, “Tano” knows that he has few options to show why he could be considered to stay in Las Águilas bench, which is why he will start the players that improved the most during the week and not an established starting XI, which will also create a sense of competence much needed.
