The unfortunate events that happened yesterday in Estadio Corregidora, where the game between Club Querétaro and Atlas was suspended after a brawl in the stands that then translated into the pitch, will carry consequences to Gallos Blancos.
Could Querétaro be disqualified from Liga MX? Regulation makes it feasible
Those consequences could go from monetary sanctions and veto for their stadium to the disaffiliation of the franchise, given that the level of violence showed in the stands should not be tolerated not just in Liga MX but in the soccer world.
Even CONCACAF released a statement in which they condemn the shocking acts of vandalism and violence and urging Mexican Football Federation, Liga MX, and local authorities to fully investigate and hold accountable everyone involved.
Although they didn’t mention any sanctions towards Liga MX or FMF, they said that they will provide any necessary support in the investigations and the upcoming strong football sanctions that should be applied, which could end with the disaffiliation of Club Querétaro from Liga MX.
It’s yet unsure which actions Liga MX will take in response, as the owners of every club will have a meeting next Tuesday to agree what will happen with both Querétaro and Liga MX, as some of the options are ending Clausura without people on the stands or having just a small group of followers without any visitor fans.
But the disaffiliation of Querétaro is feasible according to Liga MX rules. If that happens, Clausura 2022 will end with only 17 teams before filling the spot in the upcoming season, as they won’t suspend the current tournament nor is possible to promote another team.
There are three possible options to fill the spot that Querétaro could leave open. The first one is the promotion of Club Atlante, who a couple of years ago where in negotiations with Querétaro to buy the franchise to have the Potros de Hierro in Liga MX again, after their relegation in 2014.
The second option is giving the spot to the other Grupo Orlegi team, Tampico Madero, given that they know how Liga MX works and will be able to have a consistent franchise, as they’ve showed with both Santos Laguna and Atlas.
The last option is including a team that’s not part of Liga de Expansión, in which case, Tiburones de Veracruz could be the chosen one, as there’s a group of investors planning on having a new franchise in Veracruz in the next few years.
