Chivas couldn’t succeed on their quest of making it into the semifinals, as Atlas put a stop to the good streak that they had prior the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory on the first leg and then a 1-1 draw on the second leg, leaving them without a ticket to the semifinals.
Although José Juan Macías returned to the starting XI in the second game of the series and was able to score a goal, the Mexican forward didn’t have the support needed from the wingers, as he often had to leave the box, where he’s more dangerous, to find the ball.
Neither Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado nor Alexis Vega were able to show why they were two of the best players for El Rebaño during the regular season, especially Alexis Vega, who has been called to become the next Chivas idol, especially after he just became the highest-paid player in the roster.
On the first leg, the 24-year-old left-winger left the game with an injury that later turned out to be just a mild soreness. He was able to return to the starting XI for the second leg, but his apparition on the pitch went unnoticed.
Ricardo Cadena realized that Vega wasn’t going to make the difference for Chivas like he used to do during the regular season, and he decided to substitute him after 60 minutes, replacing him with academy player Pável Pérez, who created more danger than Vega in the minutes he had on the pitch.
And according to reports from sports journalist David Medrano, the reason he decided to lower his level during the quarterfinals was to not expose him to any injuries given that El Rebaño already agreed to transfer him to Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.
Vega was more focused on remaining healthy to complete his transfer to Europe instead of helping the team to overcome the result, as his renovation was just to help Chivas earn a bigger income for his transfer instead of his desire to remain at Chivas.
The same report of David Medrano suggests that the contract extension that he recently signed, increased his release clause to $10 million, a sum that PSV has is willing to pay to acquire him for the 2022-23 season.
Will Ricardo Cadena remain in Chivas after the elimination against Atlas?
