It’s no lie to say that things in Club América haven’t worked during the current season, as they’ve only been able to win one game after 10 rounds and are at the bottom of the table with just seven points, which led to the dismissal of Santiago Solari.
What Ricardo La Volpe is asking to become the next coach of Club América
And after two games with Fernando “Tano” Ortíz on Las Águilas bench, things haven’t improved much, which is why Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños are looking to hire a new coach for the remainder of the season to help them leave the current crisis.
According to reports of TV Azteca, Las Águilas are close to signing Ricardo La Volpe and bring him back from retirement for a short stint with the Azulcremas, club that he already coached in the past in two stints, for the 1996-97 season and in 2016.
Although he wasn’t successful on those stints, Las Águilas didn’t win a championship with La Volpe in their dugout, he helped boost the careers of players like Diego Lainez and Edson Álvarez, who moved to European soccer not long after he debuted them.
The first thing he’ll do when he returns to El Nido is giving the academy players more room in the senior squad, as he knows that América currently is lacking young talent, given that with Solari only Naveda made the jump to Liga MX.
Both Baños and Azcárraga want to have more academy players debuting with the first team, but in order to do that, La Volpe will have to free up some spots, something that he’ll do by parting ways with at least four players in the current roster that haven’t been up to the needed standards.
The first player on the list is the newly arrived Juan Ferney Otero, as he was more a whim of Solari, who insisted that América needed a right-winger, than an actual improvement for the team. Jorge Meré will join the Colombian winger, as he might get relegated to a substitute role, something that wasn’t agreed when he first signed with Las Águilas.
Roger Martínez is another player that won’t have a spot in La Volpe’s roster, as he hasn’t given a reason to be considered in the starting XI. Finally, Guillermo Ochoa will be the only player that will leave by his own choice, as he can’t stand “El Bigotón” after he refused to start him in Germany 2006.
If Daniel Brailovsky arrives in Club América, these four players will leave
