Since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz became Club América’s coach after they decided to part ways with Santiago Solari for the poor results that he had in the first half of Clausura 2022, Las Águilas have showed a completely different face that has them fighting for a spot in Liguilla.

“El Tano” Ortíz has coached Las Águilas for only five games, and after the defeat on the first game he coached, the expectations for him were low, as Club América was standing last with six points after nine rounds, their worst start in a Liga MX season.

But since then, Club América managed to save a draw in the Clásico Nacional and then have three straight victories, translating into 10 points of the 15 that “Tano” Ortíz has disputed. Added to the six points they have previously, América now stands 11 and with high chances of being one of the teams that plays in Repechaje.

But even if Ortíz has gotten Las Águilas back on track, he knows that there’s still a lot more to do if they want to return to the front pages of Mexican soccer, especially with the current roster they have, as some of the players haven’t showed the needed level to play for América.

Ortíz wants three players out of América

Recently, Santiago Baños said that they’re considering keeping Fernando Ortíz in Las Águilas’ dugout for at least six more months if he has a good closure in Clausura 2022, but if he makes it at least to the semifinals, his stay will be assured.

Ortíz knows that he can manage to do it and is already planning the next season, that’s why he’s already planning what to do and which players will have to leave over the summer, especially if they are non-Mexicans, as those places could be used by new additions.

The first player that will leave Club América is Óscar Jiménez, the second goalkeeper of Las Águilas, as he ends his contract in December just like Guillermo Ochoa and América is only planning on renewing one of them, with Ochoa being the priority.

The right side of América will suffer two departures

Given the good performances that Alejandro Zendejas and Jorge Sánchez are having since “Tano” Ortíz assumed the job, both Miguel Layún and Juan Ferney Otero, who arrived at Las Águilas as a whim of Santiago Solari, already have a foot outside El Nido.
