It took most of Clausura 2022 for Amaury Vergara to finally realize that Marcelo Michel Leaño was not going to help Chivas return to the front pages of Liga MX, on the contrary, his presence in El Rebaño’s dugout was hurting their aspirations of playing Liguilla.
The first player that will leave Chivas after the aggression of El Rebaño’s followers
The 3-1 defeat against CF Monterrey pushed Amaury Vergara to part ways with Michel Leaño, who won only five games of the 22 he coached El Rebaño Sagrado since he took over the team during Apertura 2021, replacing Victor Manuel Vucetich.
In the first game that Chivas played in the post-Michel Leaño era, now with Ricardo Cadena as interim coach -Cadena was coaching Chivas’ reserve team CD Tapatío-, El Rebaño showed a different face and was able to beat Cruz Azul on Estadio Azteca.
The victory made them climb positions in the Liga MX table and with three more games left to play, they now have real aspirations of playing at least the Repechaje, as they currently stand 11 with 17 points. But even if they make it to the playoffs, there’s a cleaning in the locker room coming, as some of the players haven’t showed that they can help Chivas.
According to reports from sports journalist Jesús Hernández, Amaury Vergara and Ricardo Peláez already took the decision of parting ways with the center back Antonio “Pollo” Briseño once Clausura 2022 is over.
Briseño has been involved in several discussions with his teammates in the past few seasons, as well as being part of the mistakes that have cost Chivas points, given that with Michel Leaño the team didn’t know how to close the games.
Even Ricardo Cadena knows that Briseño doesn’t contribute to the performance of the team, as he left him on the bench on his first game in Liga MX. Briseño was going to have minutes at the end of the game, but on the last second, Cadena preferred to give Miguel Ángel Ponce the chance instead.
The 28-year-old center back is under contract with El Rebaño Sagrado until the end of the 2022-23 season, which is why they will try to send him to another Liga MX team, like Mazatlán FC or Atlético San Luis, teams that have been involved in multiple negotiations with Chivas. If they don’t accept him, Briseño will finish his contract playing in Tapatío, on Liga de Expansión.
