After Santiago Solari was sacked on Wednesday after the disappointing performance of Club América in Clausura 2022 that were aggravated when they weren’t able to beat Querétaro, who saved a draw in the last minutes of the game, things haven’t changed in El Nido.
Santiago Solari left Club América, but the crisis remains, as they lost against Monterrey
With Fernando “Tano” Ortíz in the bench for the first time on what will be a short stint, given that he’s the interim coach until Las Águilas decide who is going to be the new coach, they didn’t look different than what they used to with Solari.
It’s true that “Tano” Ortíz only had two days training the senior squad, as he was the coach of the U-20 team since Clausura 2022 started, but they didn’t show a different face or the desire of trying to change thing for América, as they looked defeated even when there were more than 10 minutes left to play.
The only player that didn’t stop running and tried to make a change was Álvaro Fidalgo, who even scored his first goal of the season with América to give them the partial victory, although in the end it didn’t help much, as Monterrey was able to come from behind and win 2-1.
It’s still yet to be seen what happens with the 24-year-old offensive midfielder, as he arrived in El Nido as a personal request of Santiago Solari, who coached him during his stint with Real Madrid Castilla, where he also learned of the talent of Jorge Meré.
Fidalgo is under contract with Las Águilas until 2025, although he could leave Club América as early as the next summer transfer window, given that he doesn’t have the support of Solari. But if he keeps performing like he did against Monterrey, he will be part of América for next season.
Fidalgo arrived in Club América in January 2021 out of CD Castellón, from Spanish third flight, where he played for just six months, as he joined as a free agent after he didn’t renew his contract with RM Castilla. He was on a six-month loan in América before Las Águilas acquired him for $1.2 million.
In the 15 months he’s been part of América, he’s played in three different Liga MX tournaments and CONCACAF Champions League, where he has missed just 6 games. Instead, he’s played 46 matches, in which he has scored five goals and has assisted the same number of times.
The decision of Mikel Arriola that will harm Club América for the next two years
