After a surprising 2021 where both Cruz Azul and Atlas broke years-long streaks of being unable to win Liga MX, 70 years and 23 years, respectively, on Clausura 2022 Club Puebla will be the team with the longest streak without a championship: 31 years.
Puebla won their last Liga MX title in the 1989/1990 season against Universidad de Guadalajara, team that currently plays in Liga de Expansión. Two seasons after, Puebla lost the last final they reached against León. Since then, Los Camoteros have been in a rollercoaster, even been relegated for a couple of seasons.
With the current management, team and coach, they slowly start targeting the long awaited championship, as they’ve become regulars in the Liguilla, something that hadn’t happened for at least a decade, when they reached back-to-back Liguillas when Chelis was coaching the team.
But Puebla is not the only team with a long streak without a Liga MX title, this are the other teams that have been waiting for a while to win again:
The Aguascalientes team now owns the second-longest streak without a championship in Liga MX. The last time Los Rayos were champions was back in 1998, during Invierno 98 tournament. For Clausura 2022, Necaxa will be 22 years without a title in the top tier Mexican league.
The Bicentenario 2010 was the last time Los Diablos Rojos won a title in Liga MX. On that year, Deportivo Toluca defeated Santos Laguna on a game that was decided on the penalty kicks. Los Chorizeros have been close to beat that streak on two occasions, the first one on 2012 in a final they lost against Tijuana, and on 2018, when Santos Laguna took revenge of the 2010 final.
One of the four most renowned teams from Liga MX has made more than a decade without a championship. The last time that Universidad Nacional won a title was on Clausura 2011. Their streak will be entering its twelfth year if Pumas don’t win the Clausura 2022.
Tijuana won its first and only Liga MX championship on 2012, on a final they ended up beating Toluca with a score of 4-1 overall. Xolos also became the youngest team to win a Liga MX title, as the team had been founded just five years earlier, in 2007.
Querétaro, Mazatlán, Juárez and San Luis are the current four Liga MX teams that have yet to win a Mexican championship.
Querétaro was the closest of the four, as they were runner-ups on 2015, when Ronaldinho was part of the squad that lost against Santos Laguna an epic final, in which Santos won 5-0 the first leg and Querétaro winning 3-0 the second leg, but falling short of lifting the trophy.
