When Santiago Baños arrived in Club América in 2017, Emilio Azcárraga gave him the goal of helping Club América to win titles. Nothing more, nothing less. A year after his arrival, Las Águilas won their first Liga MX championship. And the last one.

Juan Carlos Osorio is on the mix to replace Santiago Solari in Las Águilas

Now, five years after Baños took over, Las Águilas are going through one of the worst crises in recent years. Not only are they standing 16 in Liga MX with just four points after six games, but also don’t know what winning in Estadio Azteca means in Clausura 2022.

It’s true that most of the responsibility for Club América’s current performances rely on Santiago Solari and the players, who mostly are the same from last season, where Las Águilas were leaders with 35 points after 17 games.

But Baños hasn’t been able to prevent the crises, as he also didn’t give Solari all the additions he requested, as he couldn’t close most of the deals. That’s why Cuauhtémoc Blanco, one of the most recognizable players in Las Águilas history, wants to replace Santiago Baños in Las Águilas structure.

Can “El Cuau” replace Baños as América chairman?

Cuauhtémoc Blanco will have to wait until his period as Morelos governor ends before taking over Santiago Baños position, but it’s clear that he has the experience to help the club return to their former glory, and now has the political knowledge to negotiate better deals.

If he arrives in Club América, he could be the one to convince Carlos Vela to sign with Las Águilas, as the Los Angeles FC right-winger has claimed in the past that he admired what Cuauhtémoc Blanco achieved with El Tri and Las Águilas.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco’s numbers with Club América

Cuauhtémoc Blanco debuted with Club América in 1992, although during his first two seasons he only started one game, given that Las Águilas had strikers like Hugo Sánchez and Zague. Blanco had five different stints with Club América, until he retired in 2016.

Although he only won one Liga MX title with Las Águilas, Cuauhtémoc Blanco played a total of 334 games wearing Club América colors, in which he scored 125 goals, including the game in 2016 in which he officially retired from soccer as Las Águilas player.
