Even if Matías Almeyda won’t return to Liga MX for now, as he agreed to coach Greek side AEK Athens for the next two years with an option of adding a third year, he still wants to repeat the formula that he did when he was coaching San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.
Ricardo Cadena won’t be Chivas coach for Apertura 2022; Peláez already interviewed his replacement
Although the stint of the Argentine coach in the Major League Soccer wasn’t as successful as he expected, Almeyda was the last coach that gave Chivas a championship, as he managed to win five titles in the three years that he coached El Rebaño Sagrado.
His departure from Chivas in 2018 had to do more with disagreements with José Luis Higuera and Amaury Vergara than for sporting reasons, as in recent years he’s been the only coach able to connect with El Rebaño followers.
The affection that Almeyda received during his stint in Mexican soccer has made him very keen of Liga MX and their players, which is why he’s looking to have at least on of his former players in his new adventure in Europe, just like he did with the Quakes.
Matías Almeyda has been following closely Liga MX, looking for potential additions for his new squad, as currently they stand fifth in the Super League Greece with two games left to be played in the season, 23 points away from Olympiacos, the leader and champion of the 2021-22 season.
Almeyda knows that if they want to compete against Olympiacos, PAOK, and Panathinaikos, they will have to strengthen the roster, which is why, according to reports from TUDN, he’s looking to add Marco Fabián, who recovered his level this season.
After being without a team for the first semester of the season, Mazatlán FC gave him a six-month contract for Clausura 2022 in what became the resurgence of his career, as he ended up being an essential player for Gabriel Caballero.
His return to Europe after having played from 2016 to 2019 with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt could happen as a free agent, as he’s currently in negotiations with Mazatlán FC to return for another year, although having an offer from Europe could convince him to leave Liga MX once again.
