It took a few months for Miguel Herrera to get the ropes on how to manage a team like Tigres, given that the players were used to a completely different coaching system after Los Felinos were coached by Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti for over a decade.
Grupo Orlegi are after their third team in Liga MX
But now that Herrera finally was able to imprint his own style, Tigres are thriving and currently stand third in Clausura 2022, just behind CF Pachuca and Club Puebla, clubs that are surprising with their outstanding performances.
But Herrera knows that even with the good streak that Los Felinos currently have -they haven’t lost since round 2, when La Franja beat them 2-0 on their visit to Estadio Universitario- it’s never too early to start improving their roster for next season.
That’s why he’s looking to have back in Los Felinos a player that firstly arrived in 2016, but that “Tuca” Ferretti never give him a real chance, as he knows that his roster needs to strengthen the midfield, given that most of their problems this season have been because they’re not able to maintain the ball.
“Piojo” Herrera wants to give Lucas Zelarayán a second chance with Tigres, as the Argentine offensive midfielder was one of the most talented players that arrived in Los Felinos during the “Tuca” era, but Ferretti never give him the starting role he was expecting to have.
“El Chino” Zelarayán played for four seasons with Tigres before deciding to leave Liga MX given the few chances that he had in Ferretti’s starting XI, securing his permanent move to MLS side Columbus Crew, where he’s played since 2020.
With Tigres, Zelarayán played a total of 113 games, although almost half of those games were during the 2017-18 season, the only year he was able to establish himself in a protagonist role before being relegated to be a substitute player.
The 29-year-old offensive midfielder joined Columbus Crew for the start of the 2020 season, when he was an essential piece in the pursue of the MLS Championship. In the three season he’s being with the Crew, he’s played a total of 61 games, where he’s been able to score 25 goals and assisted 11 times. If Tigres were to acquire him, they will have to pay around $9 million for his economic rights.
