Amaury Vergara already took a decision regarding the future of Chivas and their current coach, Marcelo Michel Leaño, as the team hasn’t been playing up to the standards established for a team with the background that El Rebaño has.

Which coach could arrive at Chivas after Michel Leaño's draw in the Clasico Tapatio?

But according to reports from sports journalist Jesús Hernández in W Deportes, Vergara would not only consider leaving Michel Leaño in Chivas, but is also thinking on giving him a contract extension, and with it a raise.

It hasn’t mattered that since Michel Leaño took over the first team of Chivas as an interim coach during Apertura 2021, El Rebaño has won just five games of the 20 he’s been in Chivas’ dugout, losing seven more and saving a draw in the remainder eight.

For now, Vergara has promised to Michel Leaño that he will end Clausura 2022 as Chivas coach and during the summer they will evaluate his performance, to see if he remains as the coach of the first team or give him a different role inside El Rebaño.

What will happen if he’s removed from his current job?

According to Jesús Hernández, if Vergara finds unsatisfactory the results and performance of Chivas during Clausura 2022, Michel Leaño will return to the academy teams, where he was coaching the U-20 squad last season, before José Manuel Vucetich was sacked.

Vergara is pondering giving him a three-year contract to remain in El Rebaño’s structure, something that Chivas followers don’t seem to like given the weak performances Chivas have had with him in the dugout. The bright side is that if he leaves, Chivas will look for a quality replacement.

Who is the coach that could replace Michel Leaño?

Although there are just rumors for now, everything is pointing towards a reunion with Matías Almeyda, the last coach that gave Chivas a real identity and with it their last Liga MX title, when he was part of the institution in 2017.

For now, Almeyda is still under contract with MLS side San José Earthquakes, although his contract expires at the end of the 2022 MLS Season, in December. It’s yet to be seen if Chivas can wait that long or if they’re going to negotiate with the Quakes for Almeyda’s transfer over the summer.
