Chivas have slowly left the bottom of the table in Clausura 2022 as they currently stand 9 in Liga MX after 10 rounds, where they have earned 12 points, a result of three victories, three draws and four defeats, numbers that are far from what’s expected from a team like El Rebaño.
Marcelo Michel Leaño won’t leave Chivas in Clausura 2022
But even with three straight games without losing, the recent results of Chivas are deceiving, as they couldn’t beat the worst version of Club América in years in the scoreless draw of the Clásico Nacional last weekend.
That apparent apathy and a lack of a clear and established plan prior to the games, as well as the non-existence of a solid long-term project from Marcelo Michel Leaño is what’s preventing them to reach the top half of the table.
Michel Leaño is known for experimenting on his starting XI’s, and something that he’s done in the current season is playing without a forward on the box, preventing his strikers to shine and closing the door to players that are willing to arrive in El Rebaño, like Diego Abreu.
The 18-year-old striker has three nationalities: Mexican, Uruguayan, and Italian, as he was born in Mexico but his father, Sebastián “Loco” Abreu is from Uruguay and his mother from Italy, although he hasn’t showed interest of playing for the Azzurri.
When he was asked if he’d like to play in Mexico, Abreu answered that he wouldn’t close the doors to a team like Chivas, knowing that is the only team that plays with an All-Mexican roster and is also one of the most renowned Liga MX teams.
Abreu has yet to debut in a top-tier division, as he’s played with the U-19 academy squad of Uruguayan side Defensor Sporting. He was registered by La Farola on the senior squad for the current season, although he hasn’t been able to debut given that he’s recovering from an injury suffered in December.
Although he holds more nationalities than the Mexican, Abreu was born in Mexico City, making him a player that could wear Chivas colors. In the past, the rulebook of Chivas was stricter about those delimitations, but now, any player that has worn El Tri colors can be part of El Rebaño.
