Although the stint of Santiago Baños hasn’t been characterized for the many titles that the team has won, Club América is on pace to win their second Liga MX championship since Baños became the president of Las Águilas, back in 2017.
Club América: Federico Viñas could leave Las Águilas but they already have a contingency plan
Thanks to Fernando “Tano” Ortíz, who was named interim coach of the Azulcremas after Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños decided to part ways with Santiago Solari, Las Águilas now are waiting for their rival in quarterfinals after finishing on the top four.
The good streak that Club América had in the second half of the season, they only lost one game with Ortíz as the coach and they finished the season with eight straight games without a defeat, has made Santiago Baños confident enough that Las Águilas will crown the season with a title.
If Club América manages to win it will not only be the biggest comeback in Liga MX history, but also Fernando Ortíz will ensure his presence in Las Águilas dugout and Santiago Baños will finally achieve his second title, in what has become a season where he needs it if he wants to continue being part of América.
Since Apertura 2018, a year after Santiago Baños became Las Águilas president, Club América hasn’t won a Liga MX title, something that can cost Baños his position of they don’t manage to win this season, as even if they had a good second half, it was him who decided to hire Santiago Solari.
During an interview with ESPN, when asked about his future, Baños said that his future in Club América is not up to him, as Emilio Azcárraga already has his resignation letter but has decided to maintain him on Las Águilas structure.
It will be at the end of the season when Azcárraga will analyze the achievements of the team during the 2021-22 season and decide what will happen with Baños, who knows that if Las Águilas don’t win Liga MX this season, he might not have a job next season.
There’s been a few names linked to Club América in recent months, although three of them stand out. According to W Deportes, Daniel “Ruso” Brailovsky is who has more probabilities of replacing Baños, but Ricardo Lavolpe and even Ricardo Ferretti are also on the mix in case Brailovsky doesn’t accept.
