After the terrible start that Club América had for Clausura 2022, Las Águilas now are waiting in Liguilla to know who their rival will be in quarterfinals, and thanks the bye-week that they earned by finishing the season in the top four, they are already planning the movements they’ll have for Apertura 2022.
Liga MX: Manchester City will make Club América earn $6 million over the summer
Las Águilas managed to finish the regular season with an 8-game streak without knowing what a defeat is, including six straight victories for the Azulcremas that helped them to earn 20 points out of the 27 that they disputed with Fernando "Tano” Ortíz on the dugout.
Those points, added to the six that they managed to earn while Santiago Solari was still coaching, were all that it took for Las Águilas to ensure a direct ticket to Liguilla, as the scoreless draw against Cruz Azul on the last round helped them tie Club Puebla, but the goal difference gave them the advantage.
But Fernando Ortíz, who is now the top candidate to assume the coaching role at Club América for Apertura 2022, knows that if they want to keep the momentum going into the next season, they need to find a striker that can actually score, unlike Henry Martín or Federico Viñas.
After spending several weeks training in Inter Miami CF facilities, Giovani dos Santos had to return to Mexico when the Herons didn’t offer him a contract to join them, thanks to the outstanding performances of the Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana.
The older of the dos Santos brothers returned to El Nido to keep training and hoping to join the club for Apertura 2022, as he knows that Las Águilas are looking for a striker and given that he already knows the team and the system, he could be the perfect addition.
But during an interview with ESPN, when Santiago Baños was asked about his potential return, the Club América president denied that “Gio” is in Las Águilas plans, as even if he’s a talented player, the salary he’s requesting is something that they’re not willing to pay.
For now, the 32-year-old striker is training with Las Águilas U-20 to keep up his shape and be able to return to the pitches next season. According to Diario AS, “Gio” will try his luck in USL Championship, United States second flight, now that he knows that he doesn’t have an opportunity in the MLS.
