Fernando “Tano” Ortíz helped Club América leave behind the worst start for the club on over 60 years in the span of only eight games to help Las Águilas not only reach Repechaje but avoid playing it and making it directly to Liguilla.
Club América: Who is the first renewed member of the "Águilas" for the 2022 Apertura?
After Las Águilas started the season with just one victory over nine games, with three draws for a total of six points, everything pointed towards a complete failure for Club América in Clausura 2022, thanks to the poor performances that they had with Santiago Solari.
But once they decided to part ways with him and gave Fernando Ortíz the chance of coaching the first team, as he was coaching the U-20 squad when he was promoted, it wasn’t long before Las Águilas started winning.
Club América finished the season with an eight-game streak without a defeat, as they finished with two draws and six straight victories, which was enough for them to return to the top of the table and to the front pages of Liga MX, as they now wait for their rival in quarterfinals.
Although Club América’s season has become one of the biggest comebacks in Liga MX in recent years, within Las Águilas know that the only way of keep the momentum going for next season is to strengthen the squad.
That’s why, according to reports from sports journalist Gibrán Araige from TUDN, Santiago Baños travelled to Spain to start negotiating the loan of Diego Lainez, who plays for La Liga side Real Betis, although in the current season has played less than 5% of the minutes.
His arrival at Las Águilas, his former team, would improve instantly the attack of Club América, who have been lacking a striker that can score consistently, and would give Roger Martínez the chance to leave the left side to return to his natural position.
Although Betis know that he needs to have playing time and regularity to recover his former shape, they are prioritizing his stay in La Liga, but if there’s no interest from teams from mid-table or lower, América will be his next destination.
Diego can return to Club América; this is what Real Betis are asking
