Leonardo Fernández revived Toluca in Toluca's rout of Santos Laguna in Round 2 of Liga MX 2022, in which the Warriors could only score one goal.
After being beaten by Pumas UNAM, everyone thought that Toluca would not be up to the task in the Clausura 2022 tournament, however, with a blow of authority on the table, they showed that they can fight for the title.
The Nemesio Diez pitch turned into a party after Santos Laguna silenced the stadium in the first half with a goal by Ayrton Preciado, which suggested that another defeat was on the horizon for the team coached by Ignacio Ambriz.
However, shortly before the end of the first half, Toluca showed signs of life with a goal by Daniel Álvarez, followed by another goal by Leo Fernández and Diego Rigonato.
However, it was the Uruguayan attacking midfielder who stood out in Los Escarlatas' spectacular victory.
The first goal of the match came in the 21st minute when a Santos free kick taken by Brian Lozano turned into a spectacular cross that was finished off by Ayrton Preciado.
The Santos player appeared alone in front of goalkeeper Luis García who could do nothing to prevent the game from opening with a 1-0 score.
However, before the end of the first half, Daniel Álvarez equalized the match when he took advantage of a rebound by Carlos Acevedo to score and give the Escarlata fans the 1-1.
From the second half on, the game changed and an improved version of Toluca could be seen, as they were more on the offensive and at minute 56 Leo Fernández with a play initiated on the right flank gave the Diablos the lead.
With a spectacular triangulation of passes between Álvarez, Sanvezzo and Fernández, the latter's goal put Toluca up 2-1.
However, the show at the Nemesio Diez was not over and in the 80th minute of play, Diego Rigonato volleyed in a series of headers.
The ball went deep into the net to seal a great victory over a Santos team coached by Guillermo Almada, who could do little to stop the avalanche of Scarlets that came upon them.
The Uruguayan player proved to be not only an excellent scorer but also a great playmaker as he was always present in the opponent's area and gave his team depth in attack.
In fact, his goal was the product of a series of masterful passes made by him and his teammates, making touches between the lines that allowed them to get the space to reach the opponent's area.
In addition, every time he had the ball in his legs, his team was able to move forward and thus they were able to make plays like the ones that led to the second and third goals.
Leo Fernandez was the star of the match for the Diablos. What are Miguel Herrera and Tigres thinking right now when they let him leave and return to Toluca?
In any case, it has been an excellent Round 2 for the Uruguayan and for Toluca.
