Leo Fernández's time at Tigres is over, where he could not do much, and he will return to Toluca for the Clausura 2022, hoping to return to the level he showed with the devils in 2020.
Sources inside the club confirmed that there is already an agreement between the clubs for El Morterito to return to the red jersey and all that is left for him is to sign the contract with the team coached by Ignacio Ambriz.
The devils have been knocking on Tigres' door for months to sign the Uruguayan who now leaves in a permanent sale after a year and a half wearing the yellow and blue jersey, where he did not convince Ricardo Ferretti or Miguel Herrera and had little regularity.
The Uruguayan was not in Miguel Herrera's plans for the next tournament and the board was willing to sell him when his counterparts from the choriceros knocked on the door, so it was only a matter of time before the transfer happened.
It is estimated to be a fairly low amount compared to the first offer made by the choriceros a little less than a year ago, which was between 9 and 10 million dollars, and it dropped about half of its value during his time in the Sultana del Norte.
On this occasion, it was the best opportunity for the devils, who ended up paying his release clause, given that the South American still had a contract for a couple of more years with Tigres.
During three tournaments Leo made 35 appearances, of which he only started 15 matches and barely exceeded 1,000 minutes, with 1,300 total minutes in this period, the Uruguayan only scored one goal.
Leo returns to the club where he has shone the most as a player, as in just 10 games he played in the 2020 Clausura he ended up scoring eight goals, earning the support of Toluca fans, who demanded his return every season.
In the past days, Miguel Culebro, Tigres president stated that Leo Fernandez was always a topic of conversation during the transfer season.
"Leo Fernández has always been everyone's topic in recent transfer markets. Leo is a great player, an excellent young man, there are many teams interested in him, but we are in the analysis phase and we have not made a decision," he said.
Also the Colombian defender Francisco Meza who left Tigres at the end of the 2021 Apertura season, told the press that he doubted about Leo Fernandez's continuity.
Rubens Sambueza confirmed his departure from Toluca through his social networks. The now-former captain of the “devils” thanked his teammates, board of directors, and staff for the time he spent during his second period with the Mexican team.
The departure of the Argentinian player left a hole at the front attacking of the team which the Uruguayan Leo Fernández fills very well.
