Jonathan dos Santos arrived in Club América for the current season after LA Galaxy didn’t renew his contract given the poor results he had in the MLS at the end of his contract, but Las Águilas quickly contacted him to arrive in El Nido as one of the top additions for Clausura 2022.
The things that have changed in Club América with Fernando Ortíz as their coach
Since his arrival, it was evident that he didn’t have the expected level to be part of the games, as he was out of shape given the more than two months he was out of activity, as LA Galaxy didn’t access the playoffs of the 2021 MLS Season.
So far, the younger of the Dos Santos brothers has played half of the games of Clausura 2022, although he’s only started in two games, including the Clásico Nacional, where he only played 50 minutes, given that he was sent off after he was showed a second yellow card in less than 30 minutes.
The first yellow card he received was during the first half, when he committed a foul right at the border of the penalty box over Sebastián Pérez Bouquet, Chivas most promising player. The second one was just five minutes into the second half after Las Águilas tried to clear the ball from the box, when he committed aa foul against Pérez Bouquet once again, where he hit the young midfielder on the face with his knee.
Fernando “Tano” Ortíz wasn’t happy with the performance given by Jonathan dos Santos, especially after he trusted him to be part of the squad and failed to back up the gesture, even if he knew that “Tano” Ortíz wasn’t confident about what “Jona” could give the Las Águilas.
Now, as long as Ortíz remains as the coach of Club América, it seems hard that Dos Santos will be part of a starting XI again, as he hasn’t showed the level needed to play in América and has been more involved in the advertising of the team rather than training.
Although he just arrived in Liga MX, the 31-year-old midfielder hasn’t showed why he was considered one of the most promising Mexican talents and why he played with both FC Barcelona and Villarreal in La Liga.
So far, he’s played just 146 minutes over five games, as he’s missed five of the games that Club América has played in Clausura 2022, and he’ll miss the next one as he must pay the 1-game suspension for being sent off. In the 5 games he’s played, he’s been able to assist one time.
Daniel Brailovsky already has a coach in mind for Club América if he replaces Santiago Baños
